Sustainably Clean Teeth: SmartLifeCo Becomes a B Corp

In the US alone, plastic toothbrushes contribute over 50 million pounds of trash to our landfills. Add in packaging, floss and floss picks, and tongue scrapers, and that numbers grows even higher. But one company is on a mission to clean up oral care, SmartLifeCo. From using plant based materials to their sustainable packaging to being certified BPA free, their slogan reminds folks to “Smile, you’re saving the planet!”

SmartLifeCo isn’t one dimensionally sustainable, they’re sustainable in every aspect of the customer journey, including their tree planting initiatives.

Founded by Yosief Ellaham, SmartLifeCo decided in 2024 to go after the biggest certification of them all, B Corp certification. Yes, they had sustainable products and sustainable packaging. Yes, they were planting trees for every purchase. But they wanted to look at every aspect of their business, identify any gaps, and meet the rigorous requirements to certify their entire business as a force for good.

As of February of this year, SmartLifeCo is officially a B Corp, with a verified score of 83.5, which includes significant points for their plastic-free production and biodegradable packaging. We recently sat down with Yosief to discuss their certification and what’s next for the company.

Nathan: Yosief, first of all, congratulations. As anyone who has been through this process knows, it isn’t easy. How did it feel to be able to put that B Corporation logo on your website and all of your products?

Yosief: It feels great. I knew it wasn’t an easy certification, but it was more rigorous than I thought it would be. But that rigor makes it feel really valuable, and we’re glad you were there to shepherd us through the process.

B Corporations are businesses that have been certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet high standards of social and environmental performance.

Nathan: What motivated you to pursue B Corp certification in the first place?

Yosief: At SmartLifeCo, sustainability and ethical business practices have always been at the core of what we do. Pursuing B Corp certification was a natural step to hold ourselves accountable, validate our efforts, and join a community of businesses committed to making a real impact. It’s not just about selling eco-friendly products—it’s about ensuring our entire business operates responsibly, from sourcing to production to how we treat our employees and customers.

Nathan: You were already doing a lot of the impact related items in the assessment. In what additional areas did this process make SmartLifeCo a better company?

Yosief: The certification process helped us take a deeper look at how we operate beyond just our products. It encouraged us to strengthen our supply chain transparency, set clearer goals for social and environmental impact, and refine internal policies to ensure long-term accountability. Through our impact reporting, we assessed key areas such as carbon footprint reduction, ethical sourcing, and social responsibility. Additionally, we became Carbon Neutral with the help of We Are Neutral, which is a huge benefit!

Nathan: With this behind you, at least for the next three years, what’s next for the business?

Yosief: Now that we’ve achieved B Corp certification, our focus is on scaling our impact. We’re working on expanding our retail presence, forming partnerships with dental professionals, and continuing to innovate sustainable oral care solutions. We also want to use our platform to educate consumers on making better choices for their health and the planet. This certification is just the beginning—we’re committed to continuously improving and leading by example in the industry.
